In November 2011 a kitten fell asleep in the weeds by Kabosu's front door. Nobody came for him. So he stayed.

Atsuko Sato, the kindergarten teacher whose Shiba had just become Doge, made "found cat" flyers, called the police and the animal centre, and waited. No owner came. She named him Ginnan, the ginkgo nut, and he answered "nya-o" whenever she called. Fifteen years of photos followed.

On 26 October 2026 his mother wrote that Gin-chan has lymphoma. She chose palliative care, at home, beside him.

My sweet, sweet Gin-chan has fallen ill.

It seems we only have a little while left together.

The morning of October 13. Gin-chan, who had been his usual greedy self the day before, did not eat his breakfast.

I rushed him to the vet. His blood test showed bad liver values, and his white blood cell counts had shot up. Somewhere in his body there seemed to be strong inflammation. At his checkup a month before, everything had been normal.

He had an injection, we came home with medicine, and his appetite came back! He was my greedy Gin-chan again. Oh, thank goodness. He's going to be fine. That is what I believed.

Then, on the 22nd, his white blood cell counts were back to normal, but they found three lumps in his abdomen, each 3 centimetres across. They were likely malignant, but inflammation can also make lymph nodes swell, so we decided to wait a little and check again.

The next day, the 23rd, he vomited and we went back to the vet. He was given fluids under the skin. On the 24th and 25th he would not eat at all and had no energy. I was so worried, so worried, I could hardly bear it.

And today, the 26th, the vet examined him again. The lumps that were 3 centimetres had grown to 5. Two centimetres in only four days! The diagnosis was lymphoma.

After talking with the vet about his treatment, I decided on palliative care rather than chemotherapy.

So that Gin-chan suffers as little as possible. So that he can spend his days calm and comfortable. That is my greatest wish right now.

Today, after his injection, Gin-chan perked up and wolfed down kitten food! And the sanma I bought just for him, he ate it as if it were the most delicious thing in the world.

It seems the time we have left is short. So I want to stay by his side as much as I can, stroke him and hold him as much as I can, and do lots of the things Gin-chan loves.

      With Kabosu

I thought I left my job at the nursery school to start With Kabosu. But maybe the real reason was to treasure this time of saying goodbye to Gin-chan. That is how it has started to feel.

      Doge Dayと

I will still give my all to Doge Day on November 2 and Wanko Festa on November 15! But the rest of my time, as much as I can, I want to spend on Gin-chan.

    15. With Kabosu

With Kabosu will probably be closed more often for a while. Please forgive me. Oh, and one more thing! I can ship calendars while sitting right next to Gin-chan, so please don't hesitate to order one (lol).

Gin-chan. I love you so much. Let's eat something delicious together tomorrow, too.

To help the family directly, order a Kabosu calendar through the links in her post, or visit Doge Day on 2 November at Sakura Furusato Square.

Kabosu's story became the internet's. Ginnan's stayed home, in 294 posts on his mother's blog.

    Kabosu and DogeGinnan
    1. Kabosu comes home

A Shiba from a closed puppy mill, adopted from a shelter by Atsuko Sato, a kindergarten teacher in Sakura, Chiba.

    2. The photo

Sato posts a sideways glance on her blog. It becomes Doge.

    3. A kitten in the weeds

Coming home from the vet with Kabosu, Sato finds a kitten asleep by the front door: 2.2 kg, purring, far too tame to be a stray. She puts him in a cardboard box and makes "found cat" flyers.

    4. Not a girl after all

The foster mother checks: he is a boy, still on milk teeth, with an injured hind paw. Flyers go out by motorbike, to the police and the animal centre. Nobody claims him.

    5. Gin-chan

Tests clear, he is named Ginnan, the ginkgo nut, Gin-chan for short. How to tell him from Tsutsuji: the round face, the heavy-lidded stare, and he answers "nya-o" when called.

    6. Dog and cat

Kabosu accepts him as if he had always been there. He tiptoes around her, a little scared, and chases Tsutsuji instead.

    7. Dogecoin

Kabosu's face goes on a cryptocurrency. The family at home carries on as before.

    8. In the title

Sato's first photo book is named for all three: かぼす・つつじ・ぎんなんのほのぼの生活, the easygoing life of Kabosu, Tsutsuji and Ginnan.

    9. Onigiri

A black-and-white foster cat moves in, finds no adopter, and stays. He loves Ginnan "so intensely it's too much."

    10. Ginnan bulletins

A fan, @ouranos_ta, has been posting a daily "Ginnan bulletin" of Gin-chan and Onigiri dialogues; by September it passes episode 1,659. The Kobe Shimbun profiles the four siblings that October.

    11. Kabosu dies, aged 18

She passes peacefully at home. Ginnan is now the household's elder.

    12. Neiro

A new dog, Neiro, joins the family. Gin-chan carries on guarding the house.

    13. Doge Day

A bronze of Kabosu is unveiled at Sakura Furusato Square. Doge Day returns there every 2 November.

    14. $GINNAN

      Ginnancoin is created on pump.fun.

    15. Kidney disease

Tests after weeks of spraying around the house find stage 2 kidney disease. Tsutsuji's check that month finds the same.

    16. He stops eating

Blood tests show inflammation and poor liver values. He rallies, then a scan finds three 3 cm masses in his abdomen.

    17. Lymphoma

The masses have grown to 5 cm in four days. Sato chooses palliative care. That evening he eats kitten food and sanma. The same day $GINNAN graduates to PumpSwap and its community asks pump.fun to verify a takeover.
